WWLaxers to Make History with GB at 2017 World Games

Three Wales Women’s Lacrosse players and one coach will represent Great Britain Lacrosse at the 2017 World Games. Attacker Iona Dryden, midfielder Laura Warren, defender Charlotte Williams, and Assistant Coach Molly McCourt are set to join the GB squad in Wroclaw, Poland.

Great Britain will be one of 6 lacrosse teams to play at the World Games in Poland, August 4th – 7th 2017. This will be the first time Lacrosse has featured in the international, multi-sport event.

Head coach Nicky Budd stated, “It is an extremely exciting opportunity to select a Great Britain team to participate in such a prestigious competition as the World Games. We are in the fortunate position of being able to select an outstanding squad of lacrosse players who are an excellent combination of experience, talent and flair from our three Home Nations. This competition will see us play Japan and USA in our section games, with Australia, Canada and Poland also participating. The format of lacrosse that we will play will be slightly adjusted; it will be 10-aside and running clock which will hopefully make the game very fast and exciting and well received by the spectators at the World Games. I feel really privileged to be working with such talented lacrosse players and to be attending the World Games, which will take our sport one more step further forward.”

The World Games, first held in 1981, are an international multi-sport event, meant for sports that are not contested in the Olympic Games. The World Games are organised and governed by the International World Games Association (IWGA), recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The World Games are held every four years, one year after the summer Olympic games.

To become part of the World Games programme, the sport must be widely spread in the world and the specific international sports federation must be a member of the IWGA.

The Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) application to join the IWGA was accepted in May 2013. Lacrosse was invited to compete at the 2017 World Games in Wroclaw shortly after.

The World Games 2017 in Wrocław will be the 10th edition of the event. More than 30 sport disciplines such as various water, aerial or team sports. 3,500 athletes will visit Wrocław to compete in a brand new and renovated sport facilities.
